With Gratitude

With Thanksgiving approaching next week, I’ve been thinking about my journey as an artist and how grateful I am for the experiences I’ve had this year. As always, it has been an art fair season of ups and downs. Between crazy weather, challenges with a new booth set up, and balancing a part-time job along with my art, there have been plenty of struggles.

That said, I want to take some time to think about the things I am thankful for this year.

1)      Exploring new designs and materials

I’ve been looking at some different offerings from my current suppliers and finding new sources of interesting beads and techniques. While some of them are still on my workbench, I am so thankful for the opportunities to pursue my own inspirations and designs.

2)     Meeting new friends

Some artists find the social aspect of art fairs stressful, but I find it energizing! I am grateful for the support I’ve received from my wonderful customers and from the talented artists I meet at every show.

3)     Having a dedicated workspace

Prior to our move last year, my husband tolerated me commandeering the kitchen table and any other flat surface in service of wire work. While I am still prone to carrying projects around the house, I love having a studio office at home so I can spread out and design in a way that works for me.

4)      Feeling the support

I am very fortunate to have a supportive group of family and friends, but my husband deserves a special shout out. If you’ve seen me at an art show, you’ve probably seen him as well. I jokingly call him “the Intern”, but he has been crucial to the success of my work both behind the scenes and when I am at a show. He should probably get a promotion, but then I’d need a new intern.

5)      Attending different art shows

While I have a few favorites that I attend every year, this  year I was fortunate to be accepted into some shows that I’ve had my eye on for a while. Every art show is a little different and has its own unique character. That means each show curates their artist selection differently. I’ve had a lot of fun this year pushing my boundaries with some shows and learning how to market myself to different audiences!

I am so very grateful for all the opportunities I have and continue to have as I pursue my own art business.  I can’t wait to see what the next year brings!
